Metal Building CostPer square foot & with slab, in West Texas

There’s no honest one-size price for a metal building. Here’s what sets the cost of yours, and how to get a real number for your size and site, free.

Why No Price List

Why we don’t post a price per square foot.

Search “metal building cost per square foot” and you’ll find plenty of numbers. The trouble is they’re for somebody else’s building: a different size, different doors, a different slab, a different site and steel prices from whenever the page was written.

Every building Gorilla Builders TX quotes is priced for that project, so we don’t publish a per-foot number that would only be wrong for you. This page explains what actually drives the cost of a metal building with a slab in West Texas, so you know what to ask and what to compare.

When you’re ready, send your size and location. You’ll get a real number for your building, free.

  • Size & eave height
  • Design loads for wind and code where it sits
  • Doors, windows & openings
  • Insulation for occupied space
  • Slab & foundation design
  • Dirt work & site conditions
  • Steel & concrete pricing at the time you build
What’s in the Price

The line items behind a metal building.

When you compare quotes, make sure each one covers the same pieces. A low “kit” price that leaves out the slab, erection or site work isn’t the full cost.

01 / PACKAGE

Building package

The engineered frames, girts, purlins and roof and wall panels. Width, length, eave height, roof pitch and design loads set how much steel goes into it.

02 / CONCRETE

Slab & foundation

Floor slab, footings and anchor bolts sized from the building’s reactions and what the floor will carry. Often one of the biggest parts of the total.

03 / ERECTION

Steel erection

Setting frames, then roof and wall panels to a dried-in shell. Building size, height and site access affect the crew time.

04 / SITE

Dirt work & pad

A flat lot with good access costs less to prepare than one that needs fill, grading or drainage work. See dirt work & site prep.

05 / OPENINGS

Doors & accessories

Overhead doors, walk doors and windows. Large or numerous overhead doors also change the framing design.

06 / COMFORT

Insulation

Roof and wall insulation for shops and offices that people work in through a West Texas summer.

Common Sizes

30x40, 40x60 and 50x100 metal buildings with a slab.

These are three of the sizes people price most. Here’s what each one is often used for and what tends to move its price the most. For a number, send us the size.

SizeOften used forWhat moves the price most
30x401,200 sq ftA compact shop, a single service bay or covered storage.Door count and sizes, eave height, and the share of site work and setup costs spread over a smaller footprint.
40x602,400 sq ftA shop with a small office, equipment storage or a small warehouse.Whether there’s an office area, how many overhead doors, insulation and slab design for the vehicles inside.
50x1005,000 sq ftA warehouse, a multi-bay truck shop or an office-warehouse.Clear span vs. interior columns, eave height, heavy-load slab areas, and how much dirt work the pad needs.

Comparing sizes by price per square foot can mislead. Engineering, delivery and setup are spread over more floor in a bigger building, while extras like doors and offices add up faster in a small one.

Slab Cost

What drives the cost of the concrete slab.

The slab under a metal building isn’t just a floor. It anchors the frames, so its footings are sized from the building’s column reactions and its anchor bolts follow the manufacturer’s layout.

Because Gorilla Builders TX pours the slab and erects the steel, the foundation is built to the same engineering as the building, which avoids costly mismatches at erection. More on concrete slabs for metal buildings.

  • Floor loads. Trucks, forklifts and heavy equipment call for a heavier slab design.
  • Soils. Caliche and expansive clay are common here and affect pad prep and foundation design.
  • Site grade & fill. How much dirt has to move to build a level, well-drained pad.
  • Footings & anchor bolts. Set by the building’s engineering.
  • Built-in extras. Trench drains, equipment pads, door openings and utility stub-ups.
  • Weather. Summer pours are planned around heat and curing.
Shell vs. Turnkey

Kit, shell or finished building?

Kit only: the steel package delivered to your site. You still need the dirt work, slab, erection and crews.

Dried-in shell: dirt work, foundation, steel erection, roof and wall panels, ready for whatever goes inside. This is what Gorilla Builders TX specializes in. See shell construction.

Interior finish-out: offices, plumbing, electrical and HVAC inside the building. Gorilla Builders TX does office finish-out inside the buildings we build, so the office is planned into the building from the start. We also build in overhead cranes and wash bays.

Metal vs. Stick-Built

Is a metal building worth it?

For shops, warehouses and oilfield buildings, a pre-engineered metal building is a common choice across the Permian Basin. The frames are designed by the manufacturer for your exact size, loads and use, which makes wide clear spans and big overhead doors practical.

Whether metal or stick-built costs less depends on the building. For large open spaces, metal usually makes the most sense. We’ll talk it through when we quote yours.

  • What it’s for: shop, warehouse, truck shop, office-warehouse, retail
  • Doors: how many overhead doors and roughly what size

  • Slab: new slab needed, or existing concrete
  • Site: raw land, cleared lot or ready pad

FAQ

Metal building cost questions.

How much does a metal building cost per square foot?

There isn’t one honest per-square-foot number. The cost depends on the size, eave height, design loads, doors and openings, insulation, the slab, how much site work the lot needs and steel and concrete pricing at the time. Two buildings with the same footprint can be priced very differently. Send us your size and location for a free quote.

How much is a 40x60 metal building with a slab?

A 40x60 is 2,400 square feet, but the price depends on what’s in it: eave height, how many overhead doors and how big, whether there’s an office area, insulation, slab design and the site. Tell us those details, or just the size and what it’s for, and we’ll quote it.

Do you have to have a concrete slab for a metal building?

Almost every commercial metal building needs a foundation engineered for that building, and most shops and warehouses get a full concrete slab. The building’s engineering sets the footings and anchor bolts. See concrete slabs for metal buildings.

How thick should a concrete slab be for a metal building?

It depends on what the floor carries (trucks, forklifts, racking, equipment) and on the soil. Thickness, reinforcement and footing sizes come from the engineered drawings, and we build to that design.

Does the price include putting the building up?

A building kit price usually covers only the steel package. Our quotes can cover the building package, the concrete and the erection together as one scope, so you’re comparing the full cost of a finished, dried-in shell.

Why is my quote different from prices I saw online?

Online price lists are usually for a basic kit in a standard size, with no slab, no erection, no delivery and no site work, and they may be out of date. Your quote is for your building, on your site, with the scope spelled out.

Is the quote free?

Yes. Quotes are free and there’s no obligation. Start online, text us or call 432-234-6209.
